1914 - 1918

Athelstan Howroyd Athelstan or Athelston was the son of John William Howroyd and Eliza Ann who in 1901 were living at Howroyd's Cottage, Lofthouse. John William being a stone sawyer. Athelstan in 1901 was 1 of 3 children living in the cottage. He enlisted in nearby Rothwell, joining the KOYLI and became Pte., 47486. He was KIA on 20 July 1918 aged 29 and is remembered at Courmas British Cemetery between Reims and Chateau Thierry and lies with over 200 identified and unidentified casualties.
Jesse Illingworth Jesse was the son of Job and Eliza Ann Illingworth who in 1901 were living at Temple View, Lofthouse. Jesse was was 1 of 4 children living with Job and Eliza at the time of the census in 1901 when Jesse was employed as a masons apprentice. He enlisted in Rothwell and was KIA on 18 September 1917 aged 33 and is remembered on the Tyne Cot Memorial
Sydney Lunn Sidney or Sydney was the son of John and Sarah Ann Lunn who in 1901 were living at Parkers Cottages, Lofthouse. In the census of 1901 Sydney was 1 of 6 children living in the cottage. He enlisted in Rothwell, joining the KRRC as Rifleman 20115 and was KIA on 24 April 1917. Sydney is remembered at Feuchy Chapel British Cemetery, Wancourt

Brayford C W H Charles William Harper Brayford joined the Highland LI as 14351778.  He died on 26 March 1945 aged 30 and is remembered at Reichswald Forest Cemetery
Buttle W E Walter Ernest was the son of James and Gertrude and husband of Alice of Outwood.  He served in the Royal Artillery as Gunner 1475619 and died on 20 March 1941 aged 23 and is buried in Stanley Cemetery
Canham D A Donald Arthur Canham served as 3rd Radio Officer in the Merchant Navy onboard SS Wayfarer out of Liverpool. He died on 19 August 1944 aged 22 and is remembered at Tower Hill Memorial
Carr J H John Henderson Carr served in the RN as Leading Stoker D/KX 81020.  John died on 1 November 1944 aged 33 and is remembered on the Plymouth Naval Memorial.  He left a widow, Winifred of Lofthouse.
Churchman J W John Walter Churchman was the son of Frederick Walter Stanley and Mabel Churchman.  He served as Sergt., 551818 in the RAF.  He died on 4 February 1944 aged 22 and is remembered on the Runnymede Memorial.  He left a widow, Florence Beatrice.
Clegg L Poss : Luke Clegg who served as Sergt., T/117517 in the RASC.  He died on 9 January 1944 and is remembered at Naples War Cemetery
Cookman H Harry was the son of Robert and Jane from Robin Hood.  He served as Sergt., 1451038 in the RAFVR.  He died on 27 January 1944 aged 20 and is remembered on the Runnymede Memorial
Court G H George Henry Court was the son of George Henry and Isabella of Robin Hood.  He served in the DLI as 4699055.  George died on 10 October 1943 and is remembered at Naples War Cemetery
Cowell K Kenneth was the son of William and Sarah and served in the Duke of Wellington's as Cpl., 4622932.  He married Hilda and lived at Rothwell Haigh.  Kenneth died on 31 October 1946 age 32 and is buried at Rothwell Cemetery.
Dobinson W William was the son of W and Sarah Jane Dobinson of Lofthouse.  He served as a driver in the RASC, no T/268718.  He died on 24 July 1941 and is remembered in Belfast City Cemetery.
Hammill F Frank, the son of James and Bertha served as Able Seaman R/JX 222085 in the Royal Navy onboard HMS Settsu.  He died on 8 March 1942 aged 22 and is buried in Rothwell Holy Trinity Churchyard
Hewitt J W John William was the son of Walter and Grace and husband of Sarah of Stanley.  John served as a gunner in the RA's no 11055467.  He died on 10 December 1943 and is buried in Lofthouse Cemetery.
Hirst D Dennis was the son of John William and Evelyn and also husband of Elsie.  He served as a Gunner in the Royal Artillery, no 812102.  He died on 24 January 1942 aged 33 and is remembered on the Alamein Memorial
Hopkinson E Eric was the son of Frederick and Emily of Carlton.  He served as Sergt., 1590534 in the RAFVR.  He died on 23 May 1944 aged 19 and is remembered on the Runnymede Memorial
Hudson A R V Alan Roy Victor Hudson served as Leading Aircraftman 1812681.  He died on 26 December 1943 and is also remembered on the Runnymede Memorial

Noble J I Isaac John Noble served as a Deck Hand on the Lord Shrewsbury Fishing Vessel out of Grimsby.  He died on 8 December 1941 aged 18 and is remembered on the Tower Hill Memorial

Ramsden H Harry, the son of Alfred and Annie of Lofthouse, served in the York and Lancs Regt., as 14241637.  He died on 10 June 1944 and is remembered at Ranville War Cemetery along with over 2400 Commonwealth Casualties and 1 German
Rathmell S W Squire Walker Rathmell was the son of Clifford Walker Rathmell and his wife Harriet.  Squire served as Wireman C/MX 92805 onboard HMS Europa.  He died on 13 May 1943 aged 42 and is buried in St Mary's Churchyard, Mirfield.  He left a widow, Clara of Robin Hood.

Smales L Laurence was the son of Harry and Edith and husband of Hilda of Stanley.  Laurence served as Leading Aircraftsman 1621436 in the RAFVR.  He died on 29 December 1944 aged 23 and is remembered on the Runnymede Memorial

Thompson E G Eric Gibson Thompson was the son of Parker and Alice of Thorpe who served in the Parachute Regt., as Pte., 4622480.  He died on 5 February 1944 aged 22 and is remembered at Medjez-el-Bab Memorial, Tunisia.

Wainwright W A Willie Ackroyd Wainwright was the son of Alfred and Mary of Rothwell.  He served as Sergt., 1435595 in the RAFVR.  He died on 17 March 1943 aged 21 and is remembered on the Malta Memorial

Wrigglesworth R Robert Wrigglesworth was the son of Oliver and Florence and husband of Anniefrom Woodkirk.  He served in the RASC as Driver T/4541727.  He died on 8 February 1946 and is remembered at Munster Heath War Cemetery, Germany and lies alongside over 860 Commonwealth Casualties.  Included in this number is 277 who died post war while serving as forces of occupation.
